Is there anyway to put a barnes & noble ebook onto the Sony ereader? I know B&N has more variety for the Nook, but I wanted the Sony for a few different reasons. Now I’ll be really bummed if I can’t get my favorite books onto this reader.
Sorry, you cannot. All ebook readers protect their ebooks with DRM, and those ebooks can only be read on dedicated ebook readers. The B&N ebooks can only be read on the Nook ebook reader.
I’ve given a detailed comparison between the most popular ebook readers (including the Sony Reader, Nook, etc.) previously, in another answer here. Guess it’ll help you decide which one to choose:

And recently, Amazon has announced an upgrade to its Kindle, to secure their market shares. See here for the update details:

Among the ebook readers, the Amazon Kindle is the best I’ll say. I recommend this article, it mentioned Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader, Barnes and Nobles, and other ebook readers by the end of the review:

There are huge selection of free books for the Kindle as well, as you can find here:

Finally, Amazon just released a new Kindle DX with 50% better contrast and further price cut. I put the link below for you to check out yourself.
Guess it’ll help you decide.

No, sorry. Ebooks from different ebook readers cannot be read on each others device.
And I’ve compared the most popular ebook readers in the market, in another answer here:
