The ipad looks awesome, but will it be able to completely replace an old laptop?
The iPad cannot replace a computer. It is not a computer. It is a mobile device. Look at the specs on Apple’s website. It does not run OS X. It does not have an Intel processor. You cannot run your existing Mac software on it. It’s an overgrown iPod Touch.
This doesn’t mean it a bad idea to get one. If the iPad is the kind of mobile device you want, this it is a great option. Twice the screen real-estate of the Touch at a slightly higher price. I’m thinking seriously about getting one one they come out. Just not to replace you MacBook Pro.

I personally don’t think so. You can’t install any other apps besides the one you can get through iTunes, you can’t multitask (like listen to Pandora while you browse the web, for example), and the browser doesn’t even support Flash!

It looks stupid, why would you want to type on a touch screen? It’s so ridiculous, I would rather have a regular tablet than that. And it sounds like it should be named iTampon.

I would not waste my money on the iPad. It’s too big to be portable, and too small to be powerful. It looks like a laptop with a puny screen and no keyboard.

no, it wont replace it. its more like a giant itouch or iphone. you can do almost anything on it, but not everything.

That depends, we really have no idea how this product will impact the market, as what we have seen, in my opinion, is just a tip of an iceberg. But the fact that Apple have announced iWorks for iPad makes me think that you could use iPad as a more portable substitute for a big, bulky laptop.

To me, it looks like a blown up version of an ipod touch. I love my ipod touch, but Im not sure if the ipad will fit in my pocket. XP
The only real difference is that you can get 3g, and the screen is bigger. yippee.

The iPad looks awesome! It’s just like holding a book where you can surf the web, play games, read e-books, watch movies and a lot more. But I don’t really think it’s meant to replace a laptop. It can’t even multi-task, read and edit documents (which is really important in a laptop), it doesn’t support flash player (you can’t play flash games on the net or watch youtube videos directly from the built-in browser) So I guess it’s more of an addition.

Given the capabilities of the device, no. For that size, you’re better off simply carrying a laptop.
Apple’s biggest problem has become that they spend so much time trying to innovate that they forget how to make something functional and useful. For example, they got so caught up trying to cram every computer component into the size of the average monitor (which doesn’t offer any real advantage over a traditional desktop setup, though does pose several disadvantages), that they neglected to ‘innovate’ a multi-button mouse until 2007. I had a three-button mouse on my Gateway in 1995. The same can be said for nearly every one of Apple’s products.
I suppose it’s also worth mentioning that the iPad by no means the first Tablet PC, and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to pull their head out of the Apple trap and realize that there’s another 98% of technology out there (much of which is vastley superior).

They’ve cut too many corners in order to keep the price down. As such, you get no multitasking, no Flash, there’s no camera and there’s not even a dedicated USB port.
Anything that you want to connect the iPad to, you need to use an adapter. Heck, they even made an adapter for USB.
I’m not sure what sort of market Apple is trying to fill. They made it and sold it as an internet device, but decide to cripple it by disabling Flash. And it has no widescreen — the aspect ratio of the device is 4:3, so any movies you watched will be stretched and skewed out of proportion.
It’s definitely not going up against a netbook — it has no multi-tasking ability, and the apps can only be bought from the iTunes store. And if you own an iPhone you know how Apple loves to dictate what sort of apps you can and can’t use.
Unless Apple plans to release iPad 2.0 i don’t see them getting anywhere with their new tablet device. It’s too gimped to be considered a computer replacement.
